ASSAULTMAGAZINE.COM 04/06/2007 - Exclusive interview with Smooth Criminal From Springfield Mass.

I’m sure the name rings a bell, but no, this is not Michael Jackson. This is the collective name of four upcoming artists; XXXplicit, Chunky, Blue Steel and Renegade all hailing from Jamaica. With the confidence of a prized fighter, this group of entertainers are assured that the world will be in awe at the level of entertainment that they plan on unleashing.

After weeks of trying to get a hold of the Smooth Criminals, Assault MAgazine finally caught up with them -- via telephone -- to have this interview (with the exception of Blu Steel -- who is still at large) and expose to the world, the 5 Star Generals -- Smooth Criminal.

Phillip: Okay, who are the members of Smooth Criminal and why the name chosen?

Smooth Criminal: Well, yuh have Xplicit, Chunky, Blue Steel & Rengade. Originally it was me (Xplicit), Blue Steel and another artist. During that point is the name just came up and it just stuck… some just smooth and some just criminal…

Phillip: What influenced Smooth Criminal decide to pursue a career in music?

SC: A lot of things… yuh can say the attention, the hype, the feeling yuh get when yuh rise from the bottom to the top… yuh know… that influence us most of all.

Phillip: How long have you guys been doing music?

SC: A while now… Chunky been doing it for like 3 to 5 years, and Renegade, him a do it for like what, 8 years… yeah… I (Xplicit) been doing it for a while.

Phillip: What genre would Smooth Criminal categorize their music under, and what makes Smooth Criminal unique?

SC: Umm, Reggae-hop, that’s the type of music we do… we different cuz the music we bring to the people is unique…

Phillip: Like a new fusion?…

SC: Yeah… we blend the Reggae with the Hip-Hop.

Phillip: AWhat is the title of your first song and mixtape/album?

SC: Smooth Criminal… that is the name of the first song… the name of the album was “Smooth Criminal: Volume 1 * Reggae-Hop.

Phillip: Who would Smooth Criminal like to collaborate with?

SC: All the girls… yeah man… we will work with the girls dem… well we would collaborate with Movado, Collie Budds, wi have plans on working with Aidonia, Busy Signal, Kartel (Vybz Kartel), wi would work with the rappers too, like Jay-Z…

Phillip: Speaking of Movado and Kartel… how did Smooth Criminal feel about the battle between both artist and who you believe walked out the victor?

SC:(XXXplicit), “Kartel murder Movado”… (Chunky), “yo, Movado done Kartel, that’s how me feel”… (XXXplicit), “Yuh nuh hear Kartel lyrics“…

Phillip: Aiight, so where is Smooth Criminal from or located at this current moment?

SC: Springfield, Massachusetts

Phillip: How do you feel about the music scene in your area?

SC: A nuff talent here… but nobody want to put in the effort… things just frustrating cuz of no money and no unity… See how Houston and New York unite and come together and get their music out and thing that’s all they need… is just some unity and togetherness… and effort.

Phillip: How does Smooth Crminal get their music to the fans?

SC: Our manager G-Child arranges a lot of our exposure… we have a deal with E Records, a base spot in New Jersey, also with a entertainment label Exodus Entertainment. We also work with the VP of Universal -- Mike Brown… and the newest member with the team is Junior Morgan, from the group Morgan Heritage. .

Phillip: Okay, what is Smooth Criminal patiently waiting on?

SC: A chance fi buss… cuz when we do buss… no artist can’t eat again… cuz their fan base gone… Smooth Criminal take weh them fan base… it done for them.

Phillip: Who does the writing for Smooth Criminal and how does the tracks come together?

SC: A everybody write still… the unity is there, so when we hear a beat we all decide if it’s going to be a badman tune or a girls tune or a club tune, whatever… and from there we collectively give ideas on the music and we just write then drop the tune… The unity is there from yahd (Jamaica)… most of us knew each other from there, so we like a family, it’s not just a group, we a family.

Phillip: How can the people get in touch with Smooth Criminal?
